Chapter Twenty-Seven

Levi hardly saw Christy in the past three months or seen her smile since the horrific news regarding Perry and Trenton. Levi thought to give her space, but the space had drawn out to be months. He would see her every now and again when she attended church, but she was not as faithful as she used to be. It was strange to him. Christy always clung to her faith, but perhaps the aftermath of the invasion was too much for her. Levi routinely prayed that she’d cling to the Lord, but it seemed solace was not what she was looking for. Levi desired to visit her and see how she was doing, but since it was planting time again, he thought it best not to. He was busy with his planting as well.

Levi promised Trenton—the first time he left Live Oak—he would look after Christy, but he was not committing as well as he believed he’d be. He loved Christy, but he was torn apart, thinking about the pain Trenton’s death caused her. He wished for the past two years she would come to her senses and break things off with him, but when he died, all Levi felt was guilt. He could hardly face her with the shame he felt. Losing Trenton took everything from her—the future she dreamed of.

But the weight of Levi’s responsibility for her and their friendship weighed heavily upon him. Thinking about her living in the old, rotting cottage disgusted him. He wished there was another way he could convince Christy to move to Live Oak. She had been on Levi’s mind too often, and he needed to make sure she was all right. He needed to swallow his pride and think about their friendship. He wondered what Perry would think about the way he avoided her. Perry was her only sibling, and she was alone. There were no masculine figures in her life—except himself. She needed a friend, and it was up to him alone. He saddled his horse and set off for Winona, not thinking twice.

Levi went down the road and through the gates that were wide open. Winona seemed much quieter and more spacious than it had been. There were no voices heard. No workers. Levi had lost a few of his workers, but Winona seemed bare. He clicked his horse’s reins, making it trot faster. He came around to the fields and saw Christy pushing a plow. When he came upon her, her eyes widened in surprise.

“Levi? What are you doing here?”

Christy’s appearance almost brought tears to his eyes. Her face and hands were covered in dirt and her peach dress, that he thought looked breathtaking on her years prior at the last ball, was torn. It almost did not appear the same hue anymore. Her hair was pulled back with a bandana tied at the crown of her head. The shape of her collarbone displayed through her skin. She looked as if she had not eaten in weeks. There were gray bags beneath her eyes that no longer had a tent of sparkle.
